In a landmark ruling on Tuesday, the Federal High Court in Abuja reinstated Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP). The court ruled that the March 2024 Labour Party national convention held in Nnewi, where Abure was re-elected, was valid and conducted in accordance with Nigerian laws.
Justice Emeka Nwite, who delivered the judgement, ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise Abure’s leadership and accord him all due privileges as head of the National Working Committee of the Labour Party.
This judgement comes after INEC had earlier declared that it did not recognize Abure’s leadership, claiming the convention that re-elected him violated both the Nigerian Constitution and the Electoral Act.
In a statement released by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the court’s ruling was celebrated as a victory for the party’s constitutional process and democratic norms.
