A tragic road accident claimed the lives of five passengers and left nine others severely injured on Thursday night along the Abakaliki-Enugu Expressway in Ebonyi State. The accident involved a 16-seater mass transit bus that crashed into a construction obstacle and burst into flames, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
The incident occurred at the G-hostel axis of the expressway, a busy route linking Ebonyi with neighboring states. Ebonyi FRSC Sector Commander Igwe Henry explained that the accident happened in the middle of the night, with other responders arriving before FRSC personnel. “The vehicle rammed into a construction site and caught fire, resulting in the casualty figures we have,” he stated.
Among the victims, five people—two men and three women—were burned to death, while nine others sustained varying degrees of burn injuries. The injured passengers, which included seven females and two males, were transported to the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, for treatment. The charred remains of the deceased have been moved to the hospital morgue.
The incident has raised concerns over road safety, particularly regarding visible signage and safety measures at road maintenance sites, especially on high-traffic routes.
