Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, in an emotional tribute delivered at Enugu’s Old Government House during a Service of Songs, described the late Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu as a monumental figure for the Igbo people, especially for Imo State. Represented by Deputy Governor Lady (Dr.) Chinyere Ekomaru, Uzodimma emphasized Iwuanyanwu’s role as a father figure who worked tirelessly to advance the interests of the Igbo people and promote unity and growth across Nigeria.
“Chief Iwuanyanwu was a beacon of progress, investing in businesses, creating jobs, and advocating for a united and peaceful Nigeria,” Uzodimma expressed. Known for his philanthropic spirit and passion for economic development, Iwuanyanwu’s contributions included establishing the Iwuanyanwu Nationale football club (now Heartland FC) and funding various businesses that created employment and uplifted Igbo land.
Among those who eulogized Iwuanyanwu was Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, who likened him to a “great Iroko tree whose fall shakes the community.” Other speakers, including Prof. Uche Azikiwe, widow of Nigeria’s first president, and former Ohanaeze Ndigbo President Nnia Nwodo, commended his relentless advocacy for Igbo interests and his drive to build peace across the Southeast. The Secretary-General of Ohanaeze, Amb. Okey Emuche, pledged that Iwuanyanwu’s vision for a peaceful and united Igbo community would be carried forward.
In a sermon, Emeritus Anglican Archbishop Prof. Emmanuel O. Chukwuma called on Igbo leaders to embrace unity and prioritize the region’s development, a cause to which Iwuanyanwu had devoted much of his life.
Prince Jide Iwuanyanwu, the late icon’s son, conveyed his heartfelt gratitude, acknowledging the powerful impact his father had left on the lives of so many, saying, “My father’s legacy is reflected in the respect and admiration shown by all present here.” He expressed special thanks to Governors Uzodimma, Mbah, and the entire Ohanaeze Ndigbo leadership for honoring his father’s memory.
