Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to swiftly implementing the new national minimum wage of ₦70,000, as approved by the Federal Government. Following a series of discussions with the Imo Chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Governor announced the state’s readiness to ensure that workers start receiving the increased wage soon.

The new minimum wage, which was enacted to alleviate the burden of inflation and the rising cost of living, comes at a crucial time for many Nigerian workers. Uzodimma emphasized that his administration is prioritizing the welfare of the state’s workforce to counter the effects of economic challenges.

“We are fully committed to this increase. The negotiations with labor leaders have been very productive, and we are optimistic that the implementation will happen in the coming months,” Governor Uzodimma said during a media chat at the Government House in Owerri on October 3, 2024.

The Governor pointed out that the minimum wage policy is part of his broader plan to motivate public servants and stimulate economic growth. He also assured that the new wage structure would extend to senior staff members as part of a consequential adjustment, ensuring that all levels of the workforce benefit from the increase.

NLC Chairman, Comrade Chigemezu Nwigwe, expressed confidence in the government’s commitment, stating that plans were progressing smoothly, and workers should expect the payment to commence soon. He praised Uzodimma’s administration for being workers-friendly and for its proactive approach to improving workers’ welfare.
