The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has taken a significant step towards enhancing its surveillance and anti-smuggling operations with the acquisition of a Cessna Grand Caravan EX-208B aircraft. The Comptroller-General of the NCS, Adewale Adeniyi, announced the acquisition in a statement released by the service’s spokesman, Abdullahi Maiwada, on Sunday in Abuja.
Describing the new aircraft as a “game-changer,” Adeniyi highlighted its modern Garmin G1000 avionics system, which allows the aircraft to operate under various conditions, including day, night, and low visibility. Registered as 5N-BAA, the aircraft is equipped with advanced features that will enhance the NCS’s ability to conduct air patrols, detect smuggling routes, and provide rapid support for ground operations.
“This aircraft will significantly boost our air surveillance capabilities, with the capacity to carry ten officers and a six-hour aerial endurance, providing unparalleled coverage for our border security operations,” Adeniyi said.
Powered by a PT6 Pratt and Whitney engine known for its ruggedness and versatility, the aircraft is designed to operate efficiently on remote airstrips. Adeniyi further explained that the new addition would not only improve the NCS’s ability to intercept illegal activities but also provide logistical support for quick extractions when needed.
With its cost-efficient operational model, the aircraft will serve as a strategic asset to the NCS, offering both operational efficiency and revenue generation opportunities through Nigeria Customs Technical and Hangar Services Ltd.
The NCS’s latest acquisition reinforces its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s border security and sends a strong message to economic saboteurs that the service is better equipped to combat smuggling.
