Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has condemned the recurring collapse of Nigeria’s electricity grid, describing the situation as a “national shame” and a glaring failure of leadership. Following the latest grid collapse on Tuesday, which left numerous cities in darkness, Obi took to his X account, calling for comprehensive reforms in the country’s power infrastructure.

Obi emphasized that Nigeria’s frequent grid failures reflect a long-standing governance deficit, adding, “How long must Nigerians endure a system that fails to provide one of the critical necessities for a productive society?” He compared Nigeria’s electricity generation—under 10,000 megawatts—to other African countries like South Africa and Egypt, which generate over 40,000 megawatts each, despite having smaller populations.
