Nigerian beauty queen Chidimma Adetshina has made history by securing the first runner-up position at the 73rd Miss Universe pageant, held on November 16, 2024, in Mexico City. This achievement marks Nigeria’s highest placement in the prestigious competition to date.

Adetshina, 23, competed against over 120 contestants from around the globe, showcasing her poise and intelligence throughout the event. The crown was awarded to Victoria Kjær Theilvig of Denmark, who became the first Danish contestant to win the title. The top five were rounded out by María Fernanda Beltrán Figueroa of Mexico in third place, Suchata Chuangsri of Thailand, and Ileana Márquez Pedroza of Venezuela.

Born in Soweto to a Nigerian father and a Mozambican mother, Adetshina’s journey to the Miss Universe stage was marked by resilience. Earlier in 2024, she withdrew from the Miss South Africa pageant amid controversy over her heritage, facing online harassment and bullying. Undeterred, she embraced her Nigerian roots and was crowned Miss Universe Nigeria on August 31, 2024.
