Claudio Ranieri, the legendary Italian coach who led Leicester City to an unforgettable Premier League title in 2016, has come out of retirement to manage his hometown club Roma for a third time, signing a contract that runs until the season’s end. In a strategic shift, the 73-year-old will move into an executive advisory role with Roma following his interim coaching stint, aiding the club in selecting a permanent manager for the next season.
Ranieri accepted the Roma role after a decisive meeting in London, later receiving a warm welcome from fans at Rome’s Fiumicino airport. He takes over from Ivan Juric, whose disappointing run of just four wins from 12 games left Roma precariously positioned at 12th in Serie A. Juric’s short tenure followed the departure of former Roma captain Daniele De Rossi in September, marking the team’s third leadership change this season.
“Claudio’s connection with Roma fans is undeniable, and his experience is invaluable to us at this moment,” stated Roma’s management, emphasizing his role in both stabilizing the team and advising on Roma’s next steps.
Known for his 2009-10 Roma season, Ranieri returns to a familiar challenge, having previously led the team on an inspiring title run that narrowly fell short to Jose Mourinho’s Inter Milan. His leadership this season begins with a formidable schedule: Roma will face Napoli, Tottenham Hotspur, and Atalanta in what promises to be a baptism by fire.
