A Toyota Camry driver narrowly escaped death on Monday when a loaded 40-ft container fell onto his vehicle at Mile 2, along the Apapa-bound route in Lagos State. The quick intervention of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) ensured the driver was rescued alive.

According to a statement by LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs, Adebayo Taofiq, emergency responders swiftly extricated the driver from the crushed vehicle and transported him to the hospital for urgent medical care. Officers from the Kirikiri Police Division provided security at the scene, ensuring orderliness during the rescue operation.

The Toyota Camry, with registration number LSR 293 HJ, was successfully removed from beneath the container, and efforts to clear the fallen container are ongoing. LASTMA officials are actively managing traffic flow in the area to restore normalcy.

A Call for Safer Roads
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, emphasized the importance of securing containers properly to prevent such life-threatening incidents. He called on truck drivers and owners to strictly adhere to safety protocols, noting that negligence endangers lives and disrupts public order.

“LASTMA remains committed to ensuring road safety and continues to collaborate with relevant agencies to enhance traffic management and safeguard lives,” Bakare-Oki said.

This incident underscores the urgent need for stricter enforcement of road safety regulations, particularly concerning heavy-duty vehicles, to avert potential tragedies on Lagos roads.
