In a significant move to enhance the welfare of public servants, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has authorized the immediate implementation of the new national minimum wage of ₦70,000 for employees of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA). This decision includes the disbursement of three months’ arrears, effective from November 2024.
Acting Head of Civil Service for the FCT, Grace Adayilo, announced the minister’s approval on Monday, emphasizing that the initiative aims to alleviate the financial challenges faced by FCTA staff. Adayilo expressed gratitude to Minister Wike for his prompt approval of staff allowances and claims, noting that this gesture is expected to motivate the workforce to support the minister in delivering on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
This development aligns with the federal government’s recent efforts to revise the consolidated public service salary structure, following the enactment of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024, which increased the national minimum wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000. The legislation, signed into law by President Tinubu on July 29, 2024, mandates that the new wage structure be implemented retroactively from that date.
The approval of the new minimum wage and arrears payment is anticipated to boost morale among FCTA employees, fostering increased productivity and commitment to public service. It also reflects the administration’s dedication to improving the living standards of its workforce amid prevailing economic challenges.
