Less than two weeks to the planned burial of former Senate President Dr. Joseph Wayas on November 30, 2024, construction on his mausoleum remains incomplete. The mausoleum, located in Wayas’ hometown of Bassang in Obanliku LGA, Cross River State, has stirred anticipation among the community as they prepare to honor their late statesman, whose body was repatriated from London after three years.
According to Dr. Dorn Cklaimz, chair of the burial planning committee, arrangements are well underway for a grand farewell ceremony, which has attracted commitments from former Nigerian Presidents, Senate Presidents, and prominent politicians. Although construction is still at the plastering and decking stages, the Bassang Development Union President, Chief Sylvanus Anyawho, expressed confidence that the final touches, including roofing, paving, and interior fittings, would be completed in time.
A recent site visit showed that materials like cement bags, glass windows, and other essentials have been delivered, while construction teams work tirelessly to finish on schedule. Local sources confirmed that a grader is expected to clear the grounds, ensuring an orderly and respectful setting for the burial.
Chief Press Secretary to Governor Bassey Otu, Gill Nsa, shared that a chopper is scheduled to transfer Wayas’ body from Calabar’s UJ Esuene Stadium, where the primary funeral ceremony will take place, to Bassang. Additionally, the Office of the Senate President, Dr. Godswill Akpabio, pledged to transport the body from Abuja to Calabar and finally to the burial site.
Wayas, a prominent figure in Nigerian politics who served as Senate President from 1979 to 1983, left a legacy remembered for bridging divides and fostering collaboration across political spheres. His burial is set to be a historic event, highlighting the profound impact of his leadership on both Cross River State and Nigeria.
