On Monday, November 18, 2024, armed assailants enforcing the unauthorized sit-at-home directive launched deadly attacks in Anambra State, resulting in the deaths of four vigilante members and injuries to seven others.

The first incident occurred in Ukpo, Dunukofia Local Government Area, where gunmen ambushed a vehicle carrying members of the Community Vigilante Services (AVS). Three vigilantes were killed, and their vehicle was set ablaze.

Shortly after, the attackers stormed Abatete in Idemili North Local Government Area, killing one vigilante and critically injuring the President General of the community, Chief Chimame Ezigbo. Ezigbo sustained severe bullet wounds and was rushed to a nearby hospital.

Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants, armed with firearms, arrived in vehicles and motorcycles, shooting sporadically and chanting slogans. Residents fled in panic as the gunmen targeted security personnel and community leaders.

The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the attacks and stated that investigations are underway. Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, noted that the Commissioner of Police has deployed additional personnel to the affected areas to restore order and apprehend the perpetrators.

Governor Chukwuma Soludo condemned the attacks, reiterating that the sit-at-home orders are illegal and urging residents to go about their daily activities without fear. He assured the public that the state government is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens.

These incidents highlight the ongoing security challenges in Anambra State, where unauthorized groups continue to enforce sit-at-home orders, leading to violence and disruption of daily life. The state government and security agencies are urged to intensify efforts to curb these unlawful activities and protect residents.
