The Imo State House of Assembly has commended Governor Hope Uzodinma’s decision to rename the Imo International Conference Centre (IICC) after the late Chief Emmanuel Chukwuemeka Iwuanyanwu, a revered elder statesman and former President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo. The renaming, announced during Iwuanyanwu’s burial on November 1, 2024, has been celebrated as a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to the advancement of the Igbo community and Nigeria as a whole.

The assembly’s support followed the adoption of a motion moved by Innocent Ikpamezie, the representative of Mbaitoli Constituency, who expressed deep gratitude to the state government for heeding an earlier appeal by the legislative body to immortalize the late leader. Ikpamezie highlighted that renaming the IICC after Iwuanyanwu symbolizes respect for his monumental contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape and Igbo heritage. “The late Chief Iwuanyanwu was not just a son of Ndigbo but a national figure whose influence and dedication to unity, progress, and cultural pride were unparalleled,” he stated.

In September 2024, the House had formally urged Governor Uzodinma to honour the late leader by renaming the IICC in his memory. This call resonated across the state, with numerous stakeholders voicing their support for the move. In response, Governor Uzodinma confirmed the renaming during the burial proceedings, declaring that the IICC would henceforth be known as the Engr. Dr. Emmanuel Chukwuemeka Iwuanyanwu Conference Centre.
