The Imo State Police Command has launched a high-stakes operation to rescue Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Azubuike, the parish priest of St. Theresa’s Catholic Parish in Obollo, Isiala Mbano Local Government Area. The priest was abducted on Tuesday evening along Aliyi community road, as he was returning from an assignment.
The spokesperson for the Imo State Police, Henry Okoye, confirmed that an investigation team is actively working to track down the kidnappers and ensure the priest’s safe return. “The Commissioner of Police has initiated a high-powered investigation team to rescue the Catholic priest and apprehend those responsible,” Okoye stated.
Ordained on September 27, 2014, Rev. Fr. Azubuike is highly regarded in the Catholic Diocese of Okigwe, which has now called upon the faithful for prayers. In a statement released Tuesday night, the diocese’s chancellor, Very Rev. Fr. Princewill Iwuanyanwu, appealed to the clergy and laity alike for “fervent prayers” for the priest’s safety, urging parishioners to unite in solidarity and hope for his quick and safe return.
The diocese’s statement, titled “Notification of Kidnap and Call for Prayers”, emphasized the distress surrounding the incident and rallied the Catholic community to stand in prayerful support. “We trust in your goodwill and solidarity,” the statement read, highlighting the depth of concern among local residents and church members.
Community leaders in Obollo, including ward councillor David Ajaero, have also spoken out, describing Rev. Fr. Azubuike as a compassionate and dedicated leader. Ajaero confirmed that the town has come together in prayer for the priest’s release. “He is a good man, devoted to his work and his people. We ask everyone to join us in praying for his safety,” Ajaero said.
A Worrying Pattern of Abductions
This incident adds to the rising wave of abductions and security concerns plaguing Imo State. Kidnappings of clergymen have become more frequent, often attributed to a combination of insecurity and targeted attacks on vulnerable individuals in remote areas.
