Nigeria’s national grid suffered yet another collapse on Thursday, plunging the entire country into darkness just days after a previous outage. The latest disruption occurred at approximately 11:20 a.m., with Nigeria National Grid confirming the breakdown on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, stating, “BREAKING: Another Grid Setback Experienced.” This marks the twelfth grid failure in the past eleven months, underscoring a worsening power crisis that has sparked outrage across the nation.
While the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has yet to provide an explanation for Thursday’s failure, it previously attributed the ongoing grid issues to “lines and generator trips.” This statement, however, has done little to calm the growing frustration among Nigerians, who have been grappling with regular blackouts despite government promises to improve power stability. Many citizens and industry stakeholders have taken to social media, voicing concerns and calling for accountability within the power sector.
The frequent blackouts have put intense pressure on the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, who on Wednesday received an investigative report on the persistent grid failures. Though the findings have not been publicly disclosed, calls for Adelabu’s removal are mounting, with citizens demanding urgent reforms and a reliable energy solution.
