Veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O Kanayo has weighed in on the ongoing backlash against singer Davido over his comments about Nigeria’s economy. Speaking during a podcast in the U.S., Davido described the nation’s economy as being “in shambles,” warning African-Americans against relocating to Nigeria.

The statement drew criticism, with many Nigerians calling for an apology. However, Kanayo has defended Davido, asserting that the singer’s remarks reflect the struggles of ordinary Nigerians and should be seen as constructive criticism.

“@davido spoke his mind, and we should respect his views. The Adelekes can feed for life, but it would be unholy for them to pretend all is well,” Kanayo said in a video on Instagram. “Critics who want him to apologize are missing the point—he speaks for Nigerians who can’t afford basic necessities.”

Kanayo emphasized the importance of free speech, urging the government to prioritize economic reforms instead of silencing critics.
