Manchester United is on the verge of appointing Ruben Amorim as its new manager after reaching an agreement with Sporting Lisbon, multiple reports reveal. The 39-year-old Portuguese coach, who has led Sporting to the top of their domestic league, is expected to take charge at Old Trafford after the November international break, with his first match anticipated to be an away fixture against Ipswich on November 24.
The Athletic reported that United paid Sporting an additional €1 million beyond Amorim’s €10 million exit clause to facilitate an early release. Sporting confirmed on Tuesday, through a statement to the Lisbon stock exchange, that United is prepared to meet the release terms for Amorim’s departure.
Following a turbulent start to the season, Manchester United sacked Erik ten Hag on Monday after a 2-1 loss to West Ham left them 14th in the Premier League standings. Despite significant summer investments in new signings, Ten Hag’s team managed only one win in their last eight games across all competitions.
Ruud van Nistelrooy, acting as interim manager, led United to a 5-2 victory over Leicester in the League Cup’s fourth round on Wednesday. Van Nistelrooy stated, “I’m here to help the club in any capacity, and I’ll continue supporting them as they transition towards the future.”
Amorim, who guided Sporting to a Portuguese league title and has gained a reputation for his tactical acumen and emphasis on youth development, emerged as United’s top choice soon after Ten Hag’s dismissal. His anticipated arrival marks a new chapter for the club, which aims to stabilize and rebuild under Amorim’s leadership.
