The Port Harcourt Refinery has officially commenced operations, a development hailed as a significant step toward addressing Nigeria’s energy needs. According to the Presidency, the refinery is now processing crude oil, with 200 trucks expected to load petroleum products daily.
Presidential spokesperson Sunday Dare announced the milestone on Tuesday via his official X handle, emphasizing the refinery’s capacity to restore hope in the nation’s energy sector. “The Port Harcourt refinery has two wings. The Old Refinery comes on stream today with an installed production capacity of 60,000 barrels per day of crude oil,” Dare noted.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) confirmed the refinery’s activation, marking a turning point in efforts to reduce dependence on imported petroleum products and improve the availability of locally refined fuel.
This milestone follows significant investments and years of rehabilitation aimed at reviving Nigeria’s refining capacity. Experts view the refinery’s operation as a crucial step toward achieving energy self-sufficiency, potentially stabilizing fuel supply and prices in the domestic market.
