Watford legend Troy Deeney has criticized Chelsea’s choice to appoint 24-year-old Reece James as club captain, labeling the decision “strange” given the defender’s persistent injury struggles. James took over the captaincy in August 2023 following the departure of Cesar Azpilicueta, but his tenure has been marred by recurring fitness issues.
Deeney expressed skepticism about James’ reliability in an interview with talkSPORT, stating, “The most damning thing you can say about Reece James is that you’re surprised when he’s on a team sheet. He always seems to break down.”
The England international, a product of Chelsea’s Academy, has endured a challenging period since his appointment. After featuring in four Premier League matches before the international break—his first appearances this season under manager Enzo Maresca—James is now sidelined again with a fresh injury ahead of Chelsea’s clash with Leicester City.
Deeney questioned the rationale behind Chelsea’s decision, noting, “It’s unfortunate when a player has recurring injury problems, but to make him captain when he’s rarely fit and available? That’s strange to me.”
James’ injury woes have become a recurring theme, raising concerns among fans and pundits about his ability to consistently lead Chelsea on the pitch. Despite his undeniable talent and leadership potential, his fitness challenges have cast a shadow over his captaincy.
