President-elect Donald Trump has announced his intention to nominate Linda McMahon, former CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), as Secretary of Education. This decision aligns with Trump’s campaign promise to dismantle the federal Department of Education and transfer educational authority back to individual states.
McMahon, 76, co-founded WWE with her husband, Vince McMahon, and served as its CEO until 2009. She previously led the Small Business Administration (SBA) during Trump’s first term, from 2017 to 2019, where she was responsible for supporting America’s small businesses, which employ around half the country’s private-sector workforce.
In addition to her business acumen, McMahon has experience in education, having served on the Connecticut Board of Education and as a trustee at Sacred Heart University, a private Catholic institution. Trump highlighted her commitment to expanding school choice and empowering parents in educational decisions.
Trump’s nomination of McMahon underscores his intent to overhaul the federal education system. During his campaign, he criticized the Department of Education and expressed a desire to eliminate it, a move supported by figures like Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy.
McMahon’s nomination is part of a series of appointments by Trump as he prepares for his upcoming term. Other notable selections include Dr. Mehmet Oz to lead the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and Howard Lutnick as Secretary of Commerce.
