As Thomas Tuchel prepares to assume the role of England’s head coach on January 1, 2025, interim manager Lee Carsley expresses confidence in the national team’s potential to secure the 2026 World Cup title. Carsley, who led England to promotion in the UEFA Nations League with five victories out of six matches, believes the squad possesses all the necessary elements for success.
“We have got all of the tools,” Carsley stated. “We just need to play them in the right order.”
During his interim tenure, Carsley introduced eight new players to the senior team, expanding the talent pool available to Tuchel. He emphasized the importance of balance and effective utilization of the squad’s depth, acknowledging the fierce competition for positions.
“One thing you don’t get with the international camps is time, so we just have to find that balance,” Carsley noted.
Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford echoed Carsley’s optimism, highlighting the fresh energy and increased competition within the team. Pickford, who has experienced near-misses in recent major tournaments, expressed hope that Tuchel’s leadership could be the catalyst for England’s long-awaited triumph.
“There’s definitely new energy and there’s going to be a lot of competition for places,” Pickford said. “But that’s what it’s about. You want the best players for England at the right moment and hopefully going forward next year we’ve got that squad ready to win.”
Tuchel, renowned for his successful stints with Chelsea and Bayern Munich, faces the challenge of ending England’s 58-year wait for a major trophy. His appointment has been met with high expectations, with many believing his tactical acumen and experience can guide the Three Lions to victory in the 2026 World Cup, set to be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
