Manchester United manager, Ruben Amorim, has challenged Brazilian winger Antony to improve his defensive contributions if he hopes to secure a regular place in the squad.
Since taking over at Old Trafford, Amorim has experimented with different combinations, utilizing players in various roles as they adapt to his preferred 3-4-3 formation. While some players, like Noussair Mazraoui at centre-back and Amad Diallo in attacking roles, have excelled, Antony has struggled to make his mark.
Speaking about Antony’s performances, Amorim highlighted the winger’s attacking abilities but stressed the need for him to enhance his defensive work rate.
“He did a great job improving in that position. He has to defend more, but he has the ability to do it and has to do it himself,” Amorim said, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano. “Every person has a chance; the power is in their hands!”
Antony’s struggles have seen him drop down the pecking order at Manchester United, and Amorim’s comments underline the Brazilian’s need to adapt if he wants to thrive under the new regime.
