The Taraba State University Chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU-TSU) has embarked on an indefinite strike following the Taraba State government and university management’s failure to address lingering welfare and institutional issues.
ASUU-TSU Chairman, Dr. Garba Mbave Joshua, announced the strike in Jalingo on Wednesday, citing unresolved issues including the absence of a pension scheme, unpaid salary arrears, the lack of a Governing Council, non-payment of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), exclusion from national minimum wage adjustments, and inadequate funding for the institution.
The union lamented that the lack of a functional pension scheme since the university’s inception threatens the future of its staff, while persistent delays in paying salary arrears have caused financial hardship. Negotiations for the balance of arrears, despite partial payments, have collapsed.
Dr. Joshua criticized the government for failing to fulfill repeated promises and for operating the university without a Governing Council for over a year, leaving critical decisions in limbo. The union warned that the strike would persist until their demands are met, urging stakeholders and the public to pressure the government into urgent action.
“This strike is in defense of our members’ welfare, the integrity of the institution, and the future of higher education in Taraba State,” the union stated.
