Civil society organizations in the South-East have condemned what they describe as a growing pattern of political repression under Governor Hope Uzodimma’s administration in Imo State. The groups, numbering 11, decried the continued detention of broadcaster Chinonso Uba, popularly known as Nonso Nkwa, and former commissioner Dr. Fabian Ihekweme. Both have been held without trial since October on allegations described as politically motivated.

The groups, in a statement released on Monday, urged Governor Uzodimma to prioritize transparency and accountability rather than silencing dissent. They also called on local and international human rights organizations to demand the immediate and unconditional release of Uba and Ihekweme.

They allege that the Anti-Kidnapping Unit and the State Investigation Department (SID) of the Imo State Police Command have been weaponized to suppress critics. These units, they claim, have become notorious for arbitrary arrests, torture, extortion, and enforced disappearances, often targeting journalists, human rights defenders, and political opponents.

The detained broadcaster, Nonso Nkwa, is reportedly suffering deteriorating health conditions, including swollen legs due to alleged inhumane treatment in custody. Similarly, Dr. Ihekweme’s wife has raised alarms over her husband’s health and safety while in detention.

Groups Highlight Misconduct and Call for Reform

The civil society organizations commended Imo State Commissioner of Police Aboki Danjuma for his efforts to maintain order but expressed concerns over alleged political interference that could undermine his integrity. They called on Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun to address rogue elements within the Imo police force and ensure accountability for human rights violations.

The statement urged Governor Uzodimma to respect the rule of law, uphold freedom of expression, and end what they termed oppressive practices.
