Former Anambra State Governor and political leader, Peter Obi, has called for strict sanctions against Nigerian leaders found guilty of corruption. Speaking on Tuesday to mark International Anti-Corruption Day, Obi highlighted the devastating impact of corruption on Nigeria’s economic and social development, urging leaders to confront their actions and implement reforms.
“Nigeria has been burdened for years by a sickening level of corruption across all levels and arms of government,” Obi said in a statement. He cited alarming statistics, including a 2021 report by the Auditor-General that revealed unaccounted financial infractions of N3.403 trillion within government agencies—a sum surpassing 20% of the national budget.
Obi lamented Nigeria’s ranking of 145 out of 180 countries on the Corruption Perception Index and its place among the 11 worst-governed African nations in the past decade. “Corruption is the bane of our national development,” he stated, referencing oil theft, budget padding, bribery, and misappropriation of public funds as critical issues.
He also criticized the country’s escalating debt profile, which he attributed to an “insatiable hunger for loans without visible investments or economic impact.”
Obi called on anti-graft agencies to intensify their efforts against corruption and ensure that offenders face stern justice. “Those found guilty must face stern justice,” he said, emphasizing the role of transparent leadership in reducing corruption by over 60%.
He urged Nigerians to take a stand against corruption, stating, “A day like this provides an opportunity for leaders to search their consciences and eschew all forms of corrupt practices.”
Obi reaffirmed his commitment to promoting accountability and reducing corruption, asserting that good governance begins with ethical leadership.
