Former Germany international Didi Hamann has named Liverpool and Bayern Munich as his top picks to win the revamped UEFA Champions League this season.

Liverpool, 2019 Champions League winners, remain the only team with a flawless record after six group-stage games. The Reds secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Girona on Tuesday night, extending their impressive European form. Domestically, Arne Slot’s men sit four points clear at the Premier League summit with a game in hand.

Bayern Munich, another of Hamann’s favorites, showcased their dominance with a resounding 5-1 win over Shakhtar Donetsk, climbing to eighth in the league-phase table. The Bundesliga giants also lead their domestic league, sitting six points clear of their rivals.

Speaking to Genting Casino, Hamann said, “My Champions League favorites at the moment are Liverpool and Bayern Munich, but I think the Milan clubs could pose a threat too.

“Barcelona have fallen off a bit, and Arsenal are capable, but how they lost to Bayern last year was really disappointing for them.”

Both Liverpool and Bayern Munich have rich European histories, and Hamann’s confidence in their ability to secure the prestigious trophy further intensifies the buzz around this season’s competition.
