Tensions flared on Tuesday at the Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, as supporters of human rights activist Dele Farotimi and legal luminary Aare Afe Babalola clashed following the adjournment of Farotimi’s bail ruling to December 20, 2024.
Farotimi is facing defamation charges brought by Babalola over statements in his book, Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System. The case has drawn significant public attention, with activists rallying in support of Farotimi while others defend Babalola’s reputation as an elder statesman.
Eyewitnesses reported a heated shouting match between the two groups on the court premises, with supporters nearly engaging in physical altercations. Human rights activists expressed frustration over the adjournment, accusing the judiciary of delaying justice. Meanwhile, Babalola’s supporters condemned the activists for their criticism of Babalola and alleged plans to disrupt the peace of Ekiti State with protests.
Despite earlier declarations of protests by activists, no demonstrations took place in Ado-Ekiti on Tuesday.
The ongoing legal battle has sparked debates about freedom of expression, respect for elders, and the boundaries of public critique, with both sides vowing to stand firm in their positions as the case continues.
