First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has emphasized the need for increased care and medical support for the elderly to ensure they live long, healthy, and fulfilling lives. Represented by Dr. Nonye Soludo, the wife of the Anambra State Governor, she made this call during the 2nd edition of the Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme (RHIESS), held across Nigeria.
Speaking at the event in Awka on Wednesday, the First Lady highlighted the importance of the program, which aims to improve the welfare of aged citizens nationwide. As part of the initiative, Anambra State received N50 million, out of which 250 elderly individuals were each given N200,000 along with free medical checks, eye care, and festive items.
“The welfare and healthcare of the elderly in our society is important. I urge everyone to see this as an obligation,” Oluremi Tinubu said. “Senior citizens should prioritize their health, eat well, stay hydrated, take walks, and rest adequately while spending quality time with loved ones.”
Dr. Nonye Soludo further announced that her Healthy Living Initiative would complement the First Lady’s efforts by distributing wrappers and packs of vegetable oil to the elderly. She encouraged senior citizens to adopt healthy lifestyles by eating natural foods, staying active, and avoiding harmful chemicals.
Reproductive health expert Dr. Uju Okoye advised elderly individuals to report abuse or violence to the Ministry of Women Affairs for immediate assistance. The program has been lauded as a significant step toward improving the quality of life for senior citizens.
One of the beneficiaries, Pa Ignatius Akachucku, 72, expressed heartfelt gratitude. “This is the first time I have truly felt the presence of government in my life. The N200,000, free drugs, and medical checkup have made this Christmas and New Year unforgettable.”
The initiative underscores the government’s commitment to addressing the needs of the elderly, fostering dignity, and ensuring their well-being through practical support and community engagement.
