The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has initiated an investigation and prosecution process against a female motorist who was captured on video physically assaulting an officer performing his duty in Lagos. The incident occurred on November 7, 2024, along the Lekki-Epe Expressway within the Lekki Unit Command jurisdiction.
The viral video, lasting 1:25 minutes, shows the motorist punching the officer as he attempted to deflate her car’s tyre after her arrest for a seatbelt violation and expired vehicle papers, which had been invalid since December 2022. Despite the provocation, the FRSC officials maintained professionalism, with their commander urging restraint while deflating all the vehicle’s tyres.
Assistant Corps Marshal and Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, confirmed the incident, stating that the driver of the Toyota Corolla, with registration number EPE690HH, complied with the arrest, but a female passenger escalated the situation with verbal and physical attacks.
Efforts to de-escalate the altercation failed, prompting the involvement of the Divisional Police Officer at Ajah Police Station. Both the female passenger and the driver were subsequently detained for further investigation.
FRSC Corps Marshal commended the personnel for their professionalism and condemned the assault, urging motorists to channel grievances through appropriate legal or administrative channels. “Justice will be served to deter other violent road users,” he stated, while reiterating the Corps’ commitment to ensuring safety and order on Nigerian roads.
