Huawei Technologies Nigeria has launched Nigeria’s first local cloud at the 2024 Huawei Cloud Summit Nigeria in Lagos, marking a major milestone in the nation’s digital transformation journey. Themed “Leap Now with Cloud,” the event showcased Huawei’s commitment to enhancing Nigeria’s digital ecosystem and fostering technological growth.

Huawei’s CEO, Chris Lu, highlighted three key benefits of the local cloud: superior performance with latency of less than 15 milliseconds, enhanced data sovereignty for increased trust, and a long-term commitment to Nigeria’s digital economy.

“Building this local cloud signifies Huawei’s dedication to supporting Nigeria’s vast digital potential, driven by its youthful, talented workforce and fast-growing digital economy,” Lu stated.

The Deputy Managing Director of Huawei Nigeria, Osita Iweze, acknowledged the existing skills gap in cloud technology and emphasized Huawei’s initiatives like “ICT for Change,” “Seeds for the Future,” and “Women in ICT” programs to equip Nigerians with expertise in cloud computing, 5G, and artificial intelligence.

Iweze also addressed security concerns, revealing Huawei’s implementation of a robust three-C framework—cloud service, cybersecurity, and compliance standards—ensuring trust and adherence to global industry regulations.

Partnering with fintech firm OPAY, Huawei has strengthened Nigeria’s digital landscape by providing reliable infrastructure and support. OPAY’s COO and CTO, Dotun Adekunle, praised Huawei’s collaborative approach, describing the partnership as strategic and impactful for reaching Nigeria’s underserved markets.

Huawei’s local cloud initiative is expected to drive innovation, support small businesses, and elevate Nigeria’s position in the global digital economy.
