Pensioners in Imo State have commended Governor Hope Uzodimma for addressing a 20-year backlog of unpaid gratuities, a milestone hailed as unprecedented in the state’s democratic history.

Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) in the state, Comrade J.B. Ugochukwu, described the development as a life-changing moment for senior citizens, emphasizing that no administration since 1999 had prioritized their welfare like Uzodimma. He lauded the governor for earlier clearing pension arrears and ensuring regular monthly payments.

“This is a gesture that will remain evergreen in our memories. Although not everyone has been paid, the majority have, and they are filled with gratitude,” Ugochukwu remarked during a press briefing in Owerri.

For retirees like Mrs. Mary Nkemjika, who waited 15 years for her gratuity, the payment felt miraculous. “I retired in 2009, and no government paid me a single kobo for gratuity until now. Even the monthly pension was irregular. His Excellency has made this possible; please help me thank him,” she said, overwhelmed with emotion.

Pensioners in the state highlighted the impact of this financial relief, describing it as a much-needed reprieve after years of hardship. Many have labeled Governor Uzodimma’s administration as transformative for senior citizens.

This gesture comes amidst Uzodimma’s broader reforms in Imo State, aimed at restoring confidence in governance and addressing long-standing grievances among vulnerable groups.
