Members of the House of Representatives have contributed N704,907,578.82 from their salaries over the past five months to provide relief for vulnerable Nigerians facing severe economic hardship. The announcement was made on Thursday, December 19, by the Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, during a plenary session.

Abbas highlighted that the funds were raised after lawmakers collectively decided to donate half of their salaries to address critical poverty challenges across the nation. “About five months ago, we committed to contribute half of our salaries to support the Nigerian people. I am pleased to announce that we have raised over N704.9 million,” he stated.

The funds will be handed over to President Bola Tinubu on December 31 by a delegation led by the Speaker. The contribution is intended to directly benefit the most vulnerable Nigerians and support ongoing efforts to alleviate poverty nationwide.

This initiative has been lauded as a rare display of collective action by lawmakers to directly impact the lives of citizens, particularly in the face of growing economic challenges.
