A 19-year-old student from Kogi State University, Akungba, identified as Fauziyah Mohammed, was discovered wandering in Ilorin, Kwara State, under mysterious circumstances. The 400-level student recounted that she was on campus when, after dropping her book and attempting to retrieve it, she inexplicably found herself in Ilorin.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Ilorin reported that community members in Ajegunle Isale, Egbejila, found Fauziyah wandering on November 30, 2024. They handed her over to security officer DSO Joel Adebola Afolayan, who contacted her family. Her uncle, Malam Salihu Aliu, was delegated to act on the family’s behalf in Ilorin.
This incident raises concerns about the safety of students in the region. Earlier this year, in May 2024, eight students from the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH) in Osara, Kogi State, were rescued from kidnappers in a forest in Kwara State. The rescue operation involved a joint effort by security agencies, including the police and military. However, tensions arose when soldiers allegedly overpowered police operatives to take custody of the rescued students without proper protocol.
These events underscore the pressing need for enhanced security measures to protect students and ensure their safety within and beyond university campuses.
