Team Nigeria cemented its dominance at the 2nd Africa Military Games (AMGA) 2024, claiming the overall championship with an unprecedented haul of 234 medals, including 114 gold, 65 silver, and 45 bronze medals. The games concluded on Saturday night, marking a historic moment for the country’s armed forces in competitive sports.
Algeria, the runner-up, secured 96 medals with 53 gold, 22 silver, and 21 bronze. The North African nation, which will host the 3rd edition of the games, showcased strong performances in athletics and combat sports. Kenya came third with 59 medals, including 21 gold, 17 silver, and 12 bronze, maintaining its reputation as an athletic powerhouse.
Other top-performing countries included Ghana in fourth place, Ethiopia in fifth, and Tunisia in sixth. South Africa, Libya, Uganda, and Tanzania completed the top 10 rankings, showcasing a variety of talents across diverse disciplines.
Major General Abdullahi Maikano, President of the Organisation of Military Sports in Africa (OSMA), lauded the event as a milestone for African military cooperation. Speaking at the closing ceremony, he highlighted the unity and sportsmanship displayed by participants, calling the games “a celebration of shared values and discipline.”
“These games transcended borders and differences, uniting athletes from across the continent under the ideals of excellence and cooperation,” Maikano stated. He emphasized the importance of using the camaraderie formed during the games to foster peace and mutual respect among African nations.
The Nigerian Armed Forces, praised for their organizational efficiency, received commendation for hosting the games, which saw thousands of athletes compete in 21 sports ranging from track and field to martial arts.
