The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has defended the military’s airstrikes in Sokoto State, insisting they targeted members of the Lakurawa terrorist group. This follows reports that at least 10 people, alleged to be innocent villagers, were killed in the operation.
The airstrikes, carried out on Wednesday in the Silame Local Government Area, reportedly struck two communities, leaving several injured. Addressing journalists at Giginya Cantonment, Sokoto, the CDS maintained that those killed were criminals but assured that an investigation would be conducted to verify the claims of civilian casualties.
“We conducted the operation with precision and avoided mistakes as much as possible. If any unintended incidents occurred, we will investigate,” General Musa stated, urging communities not to harbor criminal elements.
Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State, who visited the affected communities, described the incident as a mistake and extended condolences to the victims’ families. The governor joined residents in funeral prayers and announced a ₦20 million donation to support the affected families.
Despite the controversy, General Musa reaffirmed the military’s commitment to fighting criminal elements while minimizing civilian harm. He also encouraged residents to avoid staying in areas frequented by criminals to facilitate military operations.
The CDS concluded his visit with Christmas lunch alongside troops of Operation Fansan Yamma, the military’s campaign to rid Sokoto State of banditry and terrorism.
