Fifteen Nigerian federal lawmakers, led by Hon. Peter Aniekwe, have called for decisive global action against Venâncio Mondlane, an opposition leader in Mozambique, accusing him of sponsoring terrorism and orchestrating violence that has claimed over 130 lives.

In a detailed petition dated January 8, 2025, addressed to global authorities including the European Union (EU), United Nations (UN), African Union (AU), and U.S. government, the lawmakers condemned the opposition’s alleged role in inciting chaos following Mozambique’s October 9, 2024, presidential election. The election, which saw Daniel Chapo of the ruling Frelimo party secure victory with 65% of the vote, has been marred by allegations of fraud and violent protests led by Mondlane and his party, Podemos.

The lawmakers accused Mondlane of exploiting discontent to fuel unrest, targeting public infrastructure, businesses, and government facilities. They highlighted his provocative rhetoric, including a declaration to install himself as president by January 15, as a dangerous threat to Mozambique’s fragile democracy.

“Venâncio Mondlane’s actions are calculated and reckless. He has emboldened extremist elements within his party, leveraging widespread dissatisfaction to incite violence, arson, and attacks on state officials. This is not reform; it is sabotage,” the petition read.

The petition underscored the economic and geopolitical impact of the crisis, noting that Mozambique’s role as a key supplier of critical minerals like lithium and cobalt has been disrupted. Multinational corporations, including South32 Ltd., have suspended operations, while trade routes to South Africa remain compromised. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has already downgraded Mozambique’s 2024 growth forecast due to the instability.

“Mozambique’s crisis transcends national boundaries. The disruption of critical mineral supply chains affects renewable energy and electric vehicle industries globally. Immediate intervention is required,” the lawmakers warned.
Recommended Actions
To address the crisis, the petition urged global leaders to:

  1. Impose targeted sanctions on Venâncio Mondlane and opposition leaders responsible for inciting violence.
  2. Support an International Criminal Court (ICC) investigation into potential crimes against humanity.
  3. Assist the Mozambican government in restoring order through technical and institutional support.
  4. Encourage dialogue between the government and opposition to resolve grievances within the framework of the law.

The lawmakers, including Hon. Lukman Mudashiru, Hon. Joshua Gana Audu, Hon. Mathew Nwaogu, and Hon. Ngozi Okoli, among others, emphasized the importance of safeguarding Mozambique’s democratic progress, warning that inaction could set a dangerous precedent for Africa’s political stability.

The petition traced Mozambique’s struggle with political instability, recalling its transition to peace after a civil war that ended in 1992. While electoral disputes are not new, the lawmakers described the current violence as unprecedented, with Mondlane’s actions threatening to undo decades of progress.

“The EU, UN, USA, and other global bodies have long championed democracy in Africa. Mozambique now stands as a test of their commitment. By acting swiftly, the international community can help restore peace and stability,” the petition concluded.
