Reverend Sisters Vincentia Maria Nwankwo and Grace Mariette Okoli of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Mother of Christ congregation have been released six days after being kidnapped in Anambra State. The nuns, abducted on January 7, 2025, around Ajalli in Orumba South Local Government Area, were returning to their base in Ogboji community after an official engagement when they were taken.
Their release, confirmed by Sr. Maria Sobenna Ikeotuonye, IHM Secretary General, in a statement titled “Notification of Release and Expression of Profound Gratitude,” brought immense relief and joy to the Catholic community and sympathizers who had fervently prayed for their freedom.
“We thank God and thank you all for your prayers and support all through these rough and uncertain days. May God forever be blessed through Mary our Mother,” the statement read. Sr. Ikeotuonye confirmed that the sisters were released unconditionally and are in good health.
The news of their freedom sparked widespread celebrations in Ogboji and surrounding communities, with many expressing gratitude for the prayers and efforts that led to the safe return of the nuns. The abduction and subsequent release highlight ongoing security challenges in the region and the resilience of the faith community.
