Renowned Afrobeats producer Adegboyega Ikwue Ogunlesi, popularly known as Adey, has alleged that he was shot at by Nigeria Police operatives during a shocking encounter in Lagos. The music producer shared details of the incident on his X handle, sparking outrage and reigniting conversations about police brutality in Nigeria.
According to Adey, the officers accused him of attempting to kill them on the highway and forcibly seized the steering wheel of his car, nearly causing a crash.
“Nigerian police shot at me today, claimed I tried to kill them, and almost totalled my car by grabbing the steering wheel and driving me into a ditch. No wahala,” he wrote.
In a follow-up post, Adey expressed his frustration, lamenting the persistent issue of police brutality in Nigeria. “I’m tired of this country and its police,” he added.
The Lagos State Police Command has yet to respond to the allegations, leaving many to demand accountability and transparency in handling the matter.
Adey’s claims have sparked a wave of reactions online, with fans, activists, and fellow entertainers expressing outrage and solidarity. Calls for reform within the Nigeria Police Force have intensified in recent years, particularly after the #EndSARS protests in 2020, which sought to address similar incidents of police misconduct.
As the music industry continues to voice its concerns, Adey’s experience serves as another reminder of the urgent need for systemic reforms to restore public confidence in law enforcement.
