Nigerian music sensation Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, is on the verge of making history as the first African artist to win two Grammys in a single night, according to Billboard.
Tems has received three nominations at the 67th Grammy Awards, set to take place on Sunday, February 2, 2025, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. She is nominated for Best African Music Performance (Love Me Jeje), Best Global Music Album (Born In The Wild), and Best R&B Song (Burning).
According to Billboard’s predictions, Tems is expected to secure victories in at least two categories—Best African Music Performance for Love Me Jeje, a remake of Seyi Sodimu’s 1997 hit, and Best Global Music Album for Born In The Wild.
The Best African Music Performance category is highly competitive, featuring Nigerian heavyweights Yemi Alade (Tomorrow), Asake & Wizkid (MMS), Chris Brown featuring Davido & Lojay (Sensational), and Burna Boy (Higher). Billboard considers Burna Boy a strong contender, while Sensational has been labeled a “Look Out For” entry.
Tems is also favored in the Best Global Music Album category, where she faces competition from Matt B & The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (Alkebulan II), Ciro Hurtado (Paisajes), Rema (Heis), and Antonio Rey (Historias De Un Flamenco). Billboard highlights Historias De Un Flamenco as a potential upset, but Tems stands out as the only previous Grammy winner among the nominees.
If Tems secures two wins, she will become the first African artist to achieve this feat in a single Grammy night, cementing her legacy as one of Africa’s most successful global music exports.
The awards ceremony will be hosted by Trevor Noah for the fifth consecutive time, with Beyoncé leading this year’s nominations with a record-breaking eleven nods.
