The Delta State Police Command, under the leadership of CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, has confirmed the arrest of Austin Ofeoritse over the alleged murder of his nephew, Billy Tenite, following a property dispute.
Police spokesperson SP Bright Edafe disclosed that the suspect is currently in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Asaba. The tragic incident occurred on January 17, 2025, in Enerhen, Uvwie Local Government Area.
According to reports, Ofeoritse allegedly struck his nephew on the forehead with an iron rod during an argument over inherited properties, leading to Tenite’s collapse. He was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
The suspect, who is the younger brother of the victim’s late mother, is believed to have been harboring resentment towards Tenite, the only son of his parents, who inherited his mother’s wealth after her death in 2010. Sources suggest that this resentment fueled the alleged premeditated attack.
In the wake of the incident, the victim’s grieving family reportedly appealed for the case to be treated as manslaughter rather than murder, citing it as a family matter. However, human rights activist Comrade Israel Joe has demanded that the case be pursued as murder.
In a statement shared on his Facebook page, Comrade Joe urged CP Abaniwonda and the Delta State Police Command to ensure that justice prevails. “This is no longer a family matter,” he asserted. “It is now a case between the police and the suspect. Justice must be served to deter similar acts in the future.”
The deceased’s pregnant wife remains in emotional distress, mourning the untimely loss of her husband.
The police have assured the public that investigations are ongoing, with further updates to be provided as the case progresses.
