The Delta State University (DELSU) community has been thrown into mourning following the gruesome assassination of Mr. Olisaemeka Chukwuma, a senior staff member in the Bursary Department. The 56-year-old was attacked and killed at his residence in the St. Bridges area of Umueji, Asaba, during his routine weekend visit on Saturday, January 25, 2025.
The incident has left colleagues and residents of Asaba shocked and calling for immediate justice. DELSU’s bursar, Mrs. Otimeyin Ekakitie-Omajuwa, expressed her grief, describing the death as devastating. “He was a good, jovial person, always cheerful and never raised his voice at anyone. This loss is deeply painful,” she lamented, praying for strength for his family.
A staff member, Mr. Moses Darah, took to social media to mourn Chukwuma, describing him as a man of peace and humor. He urged the police to prioritize the investigation, expressing concerns about growing insecurity in Asaba. “Asaba is no longer safe. This situation has left us confused and scared,” Darah wrote.
The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the assassination, with spokesperson SP Bright Edafe stating that investigations have commenced to track down the perpetrators. Although no arrests have been made, law enforcement authorities assured the public that all efforts would be made to unravel the motive behind the killing and bring the suspects to justice.
The killing of Chukwuma has heightened fears of insecurity in Asaba, which has seen a spike in violent crimes in recent months. Residents are calling on the state government to intensify security measures to prevent such incidents.
