A powerful explosion in the early hours of Sunday shook Umuneke Obazu Mbieri, Mbaitoli Local Government Area, Imo State, leaving a trail of destruction and fear among residents. The incident, which occurred around 1 a.m., destroyed a building and caused significant damage to surrounding structures, raising serious concerns about the community’s safety.
Community leader Emeka Arimanwa reported that a suspicious drone-like object was spotted hovering over Umuneke Obazu and neighboring communities, including Umunjam and Amaulu in Ihitte Mbieri, moments before the blast. Within ten minutes of the sighting, a thunderous explosion erupted, sending shockwaves through the quiet community.
Local authorities, including the Chairman of Mbaitoli LGA, Ifunanya Nwanegwo, have visited the site to assess the situation. Addressing the affected residents, Nwanegwo urged calm and assured them that investigations were underway to determine the source of the explosion and prevent future occurrences.
The Divisional Police Officer of Mbieri, SP Wet Ben, was also at the scene but refrained from making an official statement. The lack of immediate clarity has heightened anxiety in the community, with many residents calling for swift action from security agencies to uncover the cause and address the rising concerns.
