Nigeria has lost an elder statesman and patriot as former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Lt. General Jeremiah Timbut Useni, passed away on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at the age of 82 after battling a protracted illness.
The Executive Governor of Plateau State, Barrister Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, formally announced the news, describing General Useni’s death as a tremendous loss to Plateau State, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and the entire nation.
In a heartfelt statement issued in Jos, Governor Mutfwang praised Useni’s exemplary leadership and unwavering dedication to service, noting his pivotal role in promoting peace and security in Plateau State and Northern Nigeria. “His tireless efforts to ensure the safety and stability of our region and the nation at large will never be forgotten,” the governor said.
General Useni’s illustrious career spanned decades of service to Nigeria. He held key positions such as Minister of Transport, Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army, and Minister of the FCT. After retiring from the military, Useni transitioned into politics, where he further demonstrated his commitment to national service.
As a politician, Useni served as the Deputy Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and was later elected Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District in 2015 under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Governor Mutfwang lauded Useni’s legacy of compassion, generosity, and dedication to the well-being of others, emphasizing the lasting impact he had on his community and the nation. “General Useni was a pillar of strength and a model of selfless service whose contributions to the military, politics, and humanity will continue to inspire generations,” he added.
On behalf of the government and people of Plateau State, Mutfwang extended heartfelt condolences to Useni’s family, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and all Nigerians mourning the loss of the distinguished elder statesman. He prayed for God’s comfort and strength for the bereaved family and the entire nation during this difficult time.
