The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 45-year-old teacher, Stella Nwadigo, over allegations of physically abusing a three-year-old pupil at Christ-Mitots School in Ikorodu.
The Command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest on Wednesday via his X handle, stating, “The teacher is currently in our custody, while investigation is ongoing.”
The arrest followed a viral two-minute video showing the teacher repeatedly slapping the young boy for struggling to write the numbers 61 and 62. The disturbing footage, which surfaced on social media on Wednesday morning, sparked outrage across the state.
Reacting to the incident, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) also confirmed the teacher’s apprehension, expressing gratitude to the public for bringing the matter to their attention.
“We appreciate everyone who alerted us about the disturbing incident. The teacher is now in custody, and justice will take its course,” the agency posted on its verified X handle.
The case has reignited calls for stricter measures against child abuse in schools, as well as the need for better teacher training on handling young learners. Authorities assure the public that thorough investigations are underway to ensure justice for the victim.
