The Lagos State Government has announced plans to integrate mini and midi buses, commonly known as Korope and Danfo, operating on the Lekki-Ajah axis into its Bus Reform Initiative to improve public transportation and reduce extortion by hoodlums.

Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Transportation, Sola Giwa, disclosed this on Thursday, stating that the project is currently in the planning phase. He revealed that 10 bus operators have submitted letters of intent to participate in the scheme, with six already confirmed.

“All participating buses will undergo physical verification by the Vehicle Inspection Service and Motor Vehicle Administration Agency to ensure roadworthiness and proper documentation,” Giwa said. Once approved, the buses will be branded in Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) colors and equipped with validators to streamline operations.

Giwa added that the initiative includes plans to integrate union dues deductions into an e-ticketing system, addressing issues of illegal extortion by hoodlums. The project will undergo a three-month test run before full implementation, which will see mini buses restricted from operating on the Lekki-Ajah Expressway. Instead, they will be deployed to inner routes and communities to improve last-mile connectivity.

“This initiative aims to bring order to the Lekki-Ajah transport system while improving safety and service delivery,” Giwa noted.

The reform aligns with Governor Sanwo-Olu’s broader transportation strategy to modernize public transit and enhance commuter experience across Lagos.
