Tragedy struck in Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, as a middle-aged man, Sunday Obiozor Nwaka, allegedly set his wife, Blessing Chioma Nwaka, ablaze over accusations of infidelity. The horrifying incident occurred on Tuesday, leaving the mother of five with third-degree burns before she succumbed to her injuries in the early hours of Wednesday.
Witnesses and a viral video revealed that Nwaka poured fuel on his wife and ignited her after accusing her of extramarital affairs. The victim, reportedly carrying a child during the attack, fled for her life but was severely injured in the process.
Confirming the incident, Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed that the suspect has been arrested and investigations are underway.
Reacting to the gruesome act, the wife of the Anambra State governor, Mrs. Nonye Soludo, condemned the incident and vowed to ensure justice is served. In a statement issued by her aide, Daniel Ezigwe, Mrs. Soludo described the act as “gruesome and evil” and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to tackling domestic violence and abuse in the state.
“This administration views domestic violence as a serious crime, and no one found guilty will be allowed to walk free,” she stated. She also emphasized the need for systemic reforms to address the root causes of domestic violence, including drug abuse and societal decay.
The rising cases of violence against women have sparked outrage across Anambra State and beyond, with calls for stricter enforcement of laws to protect vulnerable individuals in homes. Activists are urging authorities to ensure this case sets a precedent for justice and serves as a deterrent to future offenders.
The tragic death of Blessing Chioma Nwaka adds to the growing list of domestic violence cases in Nigeria, raising urgent concerns about the need for proactive measures to curb this menace.
