Nigerian Afropop artist Akinmayokun Awodumila, widely known as May D, has opened up about his decision to reject a record deal from Psquare’s Square Records and shared untold experiences involving Davido. Speaking on The Honest Bunch podcast on January 14, 2025, May D reflected on his time living in Psquare’s boys’ quarters while collaborating with the duo, a situation he deemed unfit for personal or career growth.
May D explained that while he appreciated the opportunity, he expected more supportive arrangements from the R&B superstars, such as a room or flat within their expansive property. He described how the setup made him question his future prospects.
“If I sign an artist who’s already successful, there are many things I would put in place for them. It doesn’t have to be a house, but at least something fitting,” May D stated. “A flat wasn’t too much to ask for. I started reflecting on my life when people visited and questioned my situation.”
The singer also recalled an encounter with Davido during the early days of the pop star’s career. At the time, Davido was avoiding his father and struggling to find accommodation. May D offered him a place to stay but admitted that the state of his room at Psquare’s house was less than ideal.
“David told me, ‘Guy, I might have to stay at your place because my dad has blocked me from all hotels in Nigeria.’ When he saw my room, he said, ‘May D, is this really where you live? I can’t stay here.’ If I had a proper room, it would have been a different story,” he said.
May D’s revelations shed light on the challenges artists face behind the scenes, even when working with prominent figures in the industry. The candid discussion has sparked conversations about how established labels can better support their artists to foster growth and success.
