The Nigerian Army has launched an investigation after a private vehicle recklessly rammed into soldiers during their routine Bi-Annual Route March in Lagos, killing one and leaving several others injured.

The tragic incident occurred on Friday, January 31, 2025, near Myhoung Barracks, Yaba, when the driver, suspected to be intoxicated, lost control and struck the marching troops.

In an official statement, Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 81 Division, confirmed the incident, stating:

“Tragically, a driver in a private vehicle recklessly ran into the participating troops, resulting in the death of a soldier and injuries to others. The 81 Division Military Police, in collaboration with relevant security agencies, has commenced a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to this incident.”

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 81 Division, Major General Farouk Mijinyawa, extended his condolences to the bereaved family while assuring the public that those injured are receiving medical care at 68 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, Yaba.

The Army urged calm, emphasizing that the tragic loss will not deter their commitment to safeguarding lives and properties. The driver has been taken into custody, and further details will be disclosed as the investigation unfolds.
