The Nigeria Police Force has detained a policeman seen in a viral video holding bundles of Naira notes for Wahab Okoya, the youngest son of billionaire businessman Razaq Okoya, during a lavish party at the Okoya family mansion in Lekki, Lagos.
Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi confirmed the arrest in a statement on Friday, describing the officer’s involvement as unethical and a violation of police core values. The officer’s identity has not been disclosed, but he faces disciplinary action.
The viral video, which surfaced three days ago, showed the policeman standing in uniform behind Wahab and one of his brothers, holding bundles of cash while they sprayed money on themselves at the event. The act, widely condemned by netizens, sparked outrage over the abuse of the naira and the officer’s role in the display of opulence.
Adejobi stated, “The policeman captured in the recent viral video shared by the sons of Lagos businessman, Chief Okoya, where they were abusing the naira, has been identified and detained for disciplinary action. The involvement of the policeman has been condemned, as it’s unethical. We will always strive hard to uphold the sanctity, credibility, and core values of the police.”
The incident has reignited debates about naira abuse, often punished by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and the double standards applied to the wealthy and powerful. The police have reiterated their commitment to ethical conduct and promised appropriate measures to address the situation.
