Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has expressed dissatisfaction with Rasmus Hojlund’s performance during the Red Devils’ narrow 1-0 Premier League victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday. Ferdinand highlighted the Denmark international’s struggles in holding up the ball and using his pace effectively.
Hojlund, who was substituted in the 60th minute following an underwhelming display, was dispossessed ten times in the first half alone—a statistic that Ferdinand described as telling.
Speaking on TNT Sports, Ferdinand criticized Hojlund’s inability to maintain possession, which he said affected United’s ability to advance effectively.
“Hold the ball up, keep the ball. You’re the platform for us to get up the pitch. Far too often, he’s too loose on the ball. He doesn’t do things quick enough,” Ferdinand said.
Ferdinand added that Hojlund needs to better utilize his pace to threaten defenses and create opportunities, noting, “He was slack and loose in possession. United can’t get out and get good possession in the final third when their No. 9 isn’t able to hold the ball up.”
Despite Hojlund’s struggles, United secured all three points thanks to a deflected strike from Lisandro Martinez in the 78th minute. However, Ferdinand emphasized that the young striker’s improvement is crucial for Manchester United’s offensive cohesion in the long run.
